We have had an unusual amount of rain this summer. Afternoon showers just seem like a normal part of our days recently.
I always love a bright summer day as it makes everything inside seem more cheerful the minute the blinds are open. Since the sunny days have been fewer lately, I have found ways to brighten our home on the inside even when it’s darker outside.
Seven Ways to Brighten a Home on a Rainy Afternoon
1. Place a bouquet of flowers on the kitchen table in a pretty vase.
Don’t spend a lot of money on a fancy flower arrangement. Just buy a pretty wrap of cut flowers at the grocery store. Your kitchen will automatically brighten!
2. Open the blinds.
Even if the sun isn’t shining brightly outside, opening the blinds brings in that extra bit of light.
3. Diffuse citrus scents.

Lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, orange!!! The smells of citrus are great for a rainy day, and peppermint is a favorite too!
4. Bake breakfast muffins or banana bread.
Just the smell of freshly baked goods will brighten your mood and help motivate you for number five!
5. Tidy up the clutter.
I definitely function better when there isn’t a lot of clutter lying around. Tidying up is a good morning or afternoon project! Read No Stress Housecleaning, here!
6. Turn on a lamp.
A cozy atmosphere is perfect on a rainy afternoon, and a lamp can create this nicely. I also have a lighted tree that I especially enjoy when it’s rainy out. Snuggle up with a good book on the couch or have a snuggle story time with your babies!
7. Listen to your favorite music.
Music is great for any time, so just turn it on and begin listening. It may even motivate you to tidy up the clutter or help you take a rainy day nap!
