Today marks the first day of summer! Fun in the sun and more quality family time are just a few of the perks! Keeping the Lord at the center of your family during times of recreation and when creating new family traditions is essential.
Here are some faith-based activities that can spiritually encourage your family in the Lord.
Faith-based Family Activity #1: Celebrate Leon Day.
Leon is the word “NOEL” spelled backwards. Pretty neat, huh? Leon Day is the halfway point to Christmas and is celebrated on June 25th.The Christmas season is one of the most blessed times of the year as we celebrate the birth of our Savior. The weeks leading up to the holiday are filled with music, family, traditions, and fellowship, so it’s not hard to get excited and filled with the Christmas spirit.
We often get into a spiritual rut during certain times of the year. Whether you’re hit with the winter blues or caught in the hustle and bustle of busy summer days, it’s not hard to fall behind in your faith. Use Leon Day as a way to rejuvenate that same holiday spirit from the Christmas season! After all, Christmas is all about Christ, and it’s important that we keep Him the focal point throughout the calendar year.
You have a few more days to get your Leon Day plans in place! You may want to celebrate with a big family dinner or decorate the house with Christmas decorations and even put a fun summery spin on them! Sing Christmas carols and recount biblical passages as a family while enjoying frozen hot chocolate. It will become a new summer tradition the whole family will enjoy.
Faith-based Family Activity #2: Plan a Family Movie Night.
Snuggling on the couch to watch a movie or TV show as a family is a great activity especially on summer nights or rainy days. However, an unfortunate truth about the time we live in is that most of the entertainment options (even though they are more plentiful than ever before) must be screened and filtered. Most of the content is inappropriate and rarely ever edifying. Thankfully there is a variety of Christian movie options and entertainment options available through Pure Flix. Get into your most comfy pajamas, pop your favorite popcorn, and relax as a family for a movie night experience that is entertaining and faith-centered. Reflecting as a family on morals and lessons taken from the characters and stories you’ve enjoyed is a great way to create family talk.
Faith-based Family Activity #3: Have Family Devotions Consistently.
It’s easy to tell yourself you will talk with your children about some of the bigger steps in their faith when they get a bit older, but the importance of teaching your children about God and guiding them in their walk with the Lord while they are young is integral to them growing up to be stronger Christians. It also allows them to witness to their friends and peers as they become stronger in their faith. It starts with regularly making family time to read the Bible together. Teach Scripture to them by using fun games and lessons, singing songs, and encouraging questions and participation. There are lots of helpful family devotional resources online and in bookstores that can make your family Bible lessons something the kids look forward to on a daily basis.
Faith-based Family Activity #4: Spend Time in Nature.
Sunny summer days encourage lots of outdoor family activities from backyard BBQ’s to family beach outings, but organizing a day at the park or including the children in simple gardening activities is a great way for the family to appreciate the splendor of God’s creation. God often connects with us through His creation, and you can use your family time in nature to strengthen your family’s faith.
Psalm 19:1-4 says: The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.
Nature allows God to speak to us, and spending time with your family and appreciating nature nourishes the spirit and strengthens your faith.
The greater a family grows in their faith together, the more God will touch the family every day with His grace. What are some ways that you and your family spend time and keep faith at the center of your time together?
